UK Voltage and the EU

How It Works

Electricity in the UK is supplied at a nominal 230 volts, but under European harmonisation rules introduced in 1993, voltage is permitted to operate within a tolerance of ±10%. This means homes can legally receive between 207 - 253 volts.

Before harmonisation, UK appliances were manufactured specifically for a higher domestic voltage. The move to 230V allowed manufacturers to design one appliance suitable for the entire European market and enabled cross-border electricity transmission between countries.

Many household appliances are designed to operate efficiently around the 220 - 230V range. When voltage sits toward the higher end of the permitted range, appliances do not necessarily require that additional voltage to perform their function. In certain equipment, higher voltage can lead to increased heat, vibration and unnecessary energy dissipation.

If your home is receiving voltage above what your appliances need, you could be using more electricity than required.

Reduce unnecessary energy use at the source.

Smart Voltage Control

What Does Higher Voltage Mean for My Home?

Most household appliances only need the electrical level they were designed to operate on. Excess supply does not improve performance but can lead to unnecessary energy use.

Voltsmart uses advanced auto-transformer technology built into the fuse board to regulate electricity before it is distributed throughout the home.

Each unit includes 4 reduction settings, allowing it to be configured during installation based on your property's requirements. Once installed, the fuse board operates automatically. No monitoring or behavioural change is required. Voltsmart is designed as a fit-and-forget solution at the heart of your home.

By reducing excess electrical supply, Voltsmart helps minimise avoidable energy waste and unnecessary electrical stress. Lower energy waste means lower overall consumption and because electricity bills are based on kilowatt-hours, reduced consumption can lead to lower electricity costs.

Lower Energy Spend

How Does This Reduce My Electricity Bill?

Your electricity bill is based on how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) your home uses. The more electricity you consume, the more you pay.

Voltsmart works at the point where electricity enters and is distributed around your home. By reducing unnecessary excess voltage supplied to the appliances you currently use, it helps cut avoidable energy waste where appliances respond to voltage reduction.

When your home uses fewer kilowatt-hours, your electricity costs reduce accordingly. At the same time, lowering unnecessary electrical and thermal stress can support longer appliance lifecycles. Fewer premature replacements can mean lower maintenance and replacement costs over time.

Savings will vary from home to home, depending on voltage levels and appliance mix. But the goal is consistent, to help you use electricity more efficiently, reduce avoidable waste and lower the overall cost of running your home.

Future-Ready Upgrade

Why Act Now?

UK homes have operated at the higher end of voltage tolerance for decades. Modern appliances do not need to be over-supplied to perform.

Managing efficiency at the distribution point allows you to optimise how electricity is used throughout your home without changing how you live.

  • It's a fuse board upgrade.
  • It reduces energy consumption at the heart of your home.
  • It lowers your carbon footprint.
